thoughts and feels and thoughts and feels [userpic]

These are from a book I had when I was small - it was one of my favorites. I don't remember who wrote it (I think it was someone European) - it was a book of letters a little girl's father wrote (and lushly illustrated) her when he was travelling around the Continent on business. They were a little bit realistic but mostly sort of imagine-y. He wrote one letter about a snow ghost who fell in love with a snowman. And he wrote one about a wind-up king of a wind-up kingdom. This poem/scrap of poem (I don't remember) is from when he was in ... Amsterdam, perhaps, and he talks about how Amsterdam is full of bookstores and it rained and he got all wet and he put his clothes in front of the fire to dry but he thought he would probably catch cold anyway. The bits in brackets are the bits I think I made up.

Now the moon itself is fading
Gliding in and out of view.
[Getting smaller, waning thinner]
Has it really split in two?

[Come, my child, and stop your weeping]
All those tears will make a flood.
Wet your shoes and spot your stockings -
Surely crying does no good.
