When I was in eighth grade, Mrs. Larkin gave all the SEEK kids these black folders chock full of random information on such esoteric topics as how to apply for a job, when you should take your SATs, how much to tip a shoeshiner, what books everyone should read, and the like (if anything can really be qualified as 'like' all of that.) One section was dedicated to how one should dress for a job interview - it suggested avoiding things like electric blue hose and pompadours, and considering the atmosphere you would be in (IBM - white shirt, suit, tie.)
I can't say that I contemplate this very often, but still it only just occured to me that while all of these things seem fairly obvious, intelligent people have the tendency to not be on terribly good terms with the obvious.
